We always need support. All Mountain Rescue Teams in England and Wales are volunteers and give their time and effort while receiving no money from government. We therefore have to raise our own resources. In the case of PMRT we reckon that we need £20k per year to keep us operational. This covers insurance, fuel, community charge (yes really!), pagers rental, clothing and kit as well as our computers, GPS, radios etc.

That figure does not include the capital depreciation of vehicles (Land Rovers converted to MRT standards is about £40kea ready to go plus kit) or a saving fund to allow us to start to think about moving to a bigger and more suitable Base.

We get our income from a variety of sources;

Street Collections. Every Team member is asked to help with flag days and we have about 10 every year. The public is very generous and we are always delighted by their response.

Donations. Many of our casualties are very kind, do say thank you’ contrary to popular belief and make a donation. We also receive a lot of unsolicitied donations from various groups that have held fund raising activities for us. Sometimes individuals just feel that they want to donate, which is not unusual.

Bequests. Very occasionally we are remembered in peoples’ wills. These are relatively rare but always really important to us. We always try and create an ‘in memorium’. Our Base and one of our vehicles for instance are named after generous donors.

Sponsorships. Mountain Rescue has a very strong reputation with which businesses enjoy being associated. Penrith MRT is very much regarded by its area and we have local and some national sponsorship both in cash and in kind.

Team Activity. Occasionally we are asked to provide a relevant service for an organisation such as hill safety for a charitable event.

Presentations. PMRT contributes to a wide range of school, community and volunteer groups presentations. We will always try and provide a speaker or a small team of presenters. We are particularly focussed on education.
